Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 – April 7, 1947) was an American industrialist, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production. Although Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, he developed and manufactured the first automobile that many middle class Americans could afford. At sixteen, he left home to work as a machinist in Detroit, gaining valuable hands-on experience that fueled his ambition to build reliable, affordable motor vehicles.

In the 1890s, Ford worked as an engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company while experimenting with gasoline-powered engines in his spare time. In 1896, he built his first successful automobile, known as the Quadricycle, proving that his ideas could become reality. After several early business ventures, he founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. His greatest commercial success came with the introduction of the Model T in 1908. Durable, easy to maintain, and reasonably priced, the Model T brought automobile ownership within reach of ordinary families and transformed personal transportation.

Ford's most significant contribution was the perfection of the moving assembly line in 1913. By organizing production into efficient, standardized steps, he dramatically reduced manufacturing time and costs while increasing productivity. He also introduced the famous five-dollar workday, nearly doubling the average industrial wage of the time, believing that well-paid workers would become loyal employees and future customers. These innovations reshaped labor practices and industrial management across the globe.

Beyond automobiles, Ford supported educational institutions, museums, and historical preservation projects. However, his legacy is also viewed with complexity. Some of his public statements and publications, particularly his antisemitic writings in the 1920s, have been widely condemned and remain a significant and troubling aspect of his historical record.

Henry Ford passed away on April 7, 1947, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary industrial innovation. Today, he is remembered as one of history's most influential entrepreneurs, whose ideas revolutionized manufacturing and transportation while continuing to shape the modern industrial world.
