Jonah Wood was bitterly disappointed in his son. During five and twenty years he had looked in vain for the development of those qualities in George, which alone, in his opinion, could insure success. But though George could talk intelligently about the great movements of business in New York, it was clear by this time that he did not possess what his father called business instincts. The old man could have forgiven him his defective appreciation in the matter of dollars and cents, however, if he had shown the slightest inclination to adopt one of the regular professions; in other words, if George had ceased to waste his time in the attempt to earn money with his pen, and had submitted to becoming a scribe in a lawyer’s office, old Wood would have been satisfied. The boy’s progress might have been slow, but it would have been sure.

Francis Marion Crawford (1854–1909) was a distinguished American novelist whose vivid storytelling, memorable characters, and rich historical settings earned him international acclaim. Best known for his historical novels, supernatural tales, and romances, Crawford was among the most popular English-language writers of the late nineteenth century. His works combined literary elegance with compelling plots, allowing readers to experience distant cultures, forgotten eras, and the mysteries of the human mind.

Born on August 2, 1854, in Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, Crawford came from a remarkable family of artists and intellectuals. His father, Thomas Crawford, was a celebrated American sculptor, while his mother, Louisa Cutler Ward, belonged to a prominent New York family. Growing up in Europe exposed him to diverse languages, cultures, and traditions, experiences that later enriched his fiction with remarkable authenticity and depth.

Crawford was educated in England, Germany, and the United States, attending institutions such as St. Paul's School in London and Harvard University. Although he did not complete a conventional academic career, his passion for travel and learning led him across Europe, India, and the Middle East. These journeys broadened his understanding of different societies and inspired many of the exotic settings that appear throughout his novels.

His literary career flourished with the publication of Mr. Isaacs in 1882, a novel set in India that immediately established him as a gifted storyteller. He went on to write more than forty novels, including Saracinesca, Sant' Ilario, and Don Orsino, which formed an acclaimed trilogy portraying the changing fortunes of an Italian noble family. Crawford also gained lasting recognition for his supernatural fiction, particularly the chilling short story The Upper Berth and the novel The Witch of Prague. His ghost stories remain admired for their psychological depth, atmospheric writing, and enduring sense of suspense.

For much of his life, Crawford lived in Italy, where he found both creative inspiration and personal happiness. His deep appreciation for Italian history, architecture, and culture became a defining feature of his work. He died on April 9, 1909, in Sorrento, Italy.

Today, Francis Marion Crawford is remembered as a versatile and accomplished novelist whose historical epics, romantic adventures, and haunting supernatural tales continue to captivate readers. His ability to blend meticulous research with engaging storytelling has secured his place as one of the notable literary figures of the Victorian era.
