The Baron Trump Collection

In these books, the young German protagonist, Wilhelm Heinrich Sebastian Von Troomp, better known as Baron Trump, with a brain so big that his head has grown to twice the normal size, travels around and under the globe with his dog Bulger, meeting residents of as-of-yet undiscovered lands before arriving back home at Castle Trump. Ingersoll Lockwood is particularly known today for his Baron Trump children's novels. However, he wrote other children's novels, as well as the dystopian novel, 1900: or; The Last President, a play, and several non-fiction works. He wrote some of his non-fiction under the pseudonym Irwin Longman.

Ingersoll Lockwood (1841–1918) was an American lawyer, diplomat, and writer whose imaginative fiction blended fantasy, adventure, satire, and political commentary. Although he was a respected legal professional during his lifetime, he is best remembered today for his unusual novels, including the Baron Trump series and the dystopian work 1900; or, The Last President. In recent years, these books have attracted renewed public interest because of their striking titles and themes, though they were written as works of fiction in the late nineteenth century.

Lockwood was born on August 2, 1841, in Ossining, New York. He came from a distinguished family of lawyers and public servants, and he followed the same professional path by studying law. Early in his career, he entered public service rather than private practice. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him as the United States Consul to the Kingdom of Hanover, making him one of the youngest members of the American diplomatic corps. After several years abroad, he returned to New York and established a successful legal practice with his brother.

Alongside his legal career, Lockwood developed a deep interest in writing. During the 1880s and 1890s, he published several imaginative children's novels filled with underground kingdoms, magical adventures, and memorable characters. Among his best-known works are The Travels and Adventures of Little Baron Trump and His Wonderful Dog Bulger and Baron Trump's Marvellous Underground Journey. He also wrote 1900; or, The Last President, a political novel that imagined a deeply divided America facing turmoil after a contentious presidential election. His writing combined humor, fantasy, and social observation in ways that were unusual for his era.

In his later years, Lockwood lived quietly in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he continued to write poetry and essays. He died on September 30, 1918, at the age of seventy-seven. Although he was largely forgotten for many decades, his books have found a new audience in the twenty-first century. Today, Ingersoll Lockwood is remembered as a creative and unconventional writer whose imaginative storytelling and willingness to experiment with fantasy and political fiction have secured him a unique place in American literary history.
