Quicksand

‘Quicksand’ is the first ground-breaking novel by American author Nella Larsen, first published in 1928. It is the semi-autobiographical tale of a young, mixed race woman who struggles to find her place in the world. It is an important novel of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the few novels of its time to explore the sexual feelings of women of color. Helga is a lovely and refined woman, a complicated and nuanced character, who is searching for meaning and purpose in her life. She is also far ahead of her time as she is self-reliant, adventurous, and intent on taking her fate into her own hands.
This deeply personal story of a woman’s difficult search for acceptance and human connection while caught between two worlds remains to this day an insightful and thought-provoking novel. The novels' greatest appeal and achievement, however, is not sociological, but psychological. As noted in the editor's comprehensive introduction, Larsen takes the theme of psychic dualism, so popular in Harlem Renaissance fiction, to a higher and more complex level, displaying a sophisticated understanding and penetrating analysis of black female psychology.

Nella Larsen (1891-1964) was the author of two novels and several short stories. She received a Guggenheim fellowship to write a third novel in 1930 but, unable to find a publisher for it, she disappeared from the literary scene and worked as a nurse.
