Unspoken Sermons Series I, II, and III

First published in 1867, ‘Unspoken Sermons Series I, II, and III’ is a series of sermons by George MacDonald, a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll.
MacDonald's theology, though sprinkled liberally throughout his reasonably significant number of books, is perhaps nowhere more noticeable than in Unspoken Sermons. These sermons, though by no means among the most popular of MacDonald's work, have had a theological influence from their first impression. That influence is presumably most notable in C.S. Lewis who called MacDonald ‘my master’ and of Unspoken Sermons said, ‘My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another.’

George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish author, poet, minister, and lecturer whose imaginative stories and profound spiritual insights made him one of the most influential literary figures of the nineteenth century. Widely regarded as a pioneer of modern fantasy literature, MacDonald inspired generations of celebrated writers, including C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, and Madeleine L'Engle. His works combined fairy tales, fantasy, realism, and Christian spirituality, inviting readers to reflect on faith, hope, love, and the wonder of the human imagination.

Born on December 10, 1824, in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, MacDonald grew up amid the rugged landscapes and rich folklore of the Scottish Highlands. These early experiences deeply influenced his writing, filling it with vivid natural imagery and timeless mythical elements. He studied at the University of Aberdeen before preparing for the ministry. Although he served briefly as a Congregational minister, his broad and compassionate theological views sometimes differed from the prevailing religious opinions of the time, leading him to devote himself increasingly to literature and public lecturing.

MacDonald's literary career was remarkably diverse. He wrote novels, fairy tales, poetry, sermons, essays, and children's stories. Among his best-known works are Phantastes (1858), At the Back of the North Wind (1871), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), The Princess and Curdie (1883), and Lilith (1895). His stories are admired for their rich symbolism, memorable characters, and imaginative worlds that appeal to both children and adults. Rather than offering simple entertainment, his books encourage readers to explore courage, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the transformative power of love.

MacDonald's influence extended far beyond his own publications. His belief that fantasy could reveal deeper spiritual truths helped shape the development of modern fantasy literature. C. S. Lewis often acknowledged that reading Phantastes profoundly changed his understanding of imagination and faith, while many later writers drew inspiration from MacDonald's unique storytelling style.

Despite periods of financial hardship and poor health, George MacDonald remained devoted to writing throughout his life. He spent his later years in Italy, where the warmer climate benefited his health. He passed away on September 18, 1905, leaving behind a remarkable literary legacy. Today, George MacDonald is remembered as a visionary storyteller whose timeless works continue to inspire readers with their beauty, wisdom, and enduring sense of hope and wonder.
