Book Description

American entrepreneur and philanthropist William H. Danforth dare you to be better tomorrow than you are today by observing his fourfold development model: mental, physical, social, and spiritual.

Practically all of the leaders in his great organization were boys who came from humble surroundings and were dared by him to high accomplishments. He has dared most by his own daring example. Mr. Danforth gives the best that is in him, whether he is guiding a great industry, traveling in a remote corner of the world, shooting ducks, or playing with his grandchildren. The day ahead is always the most thrilling day in his life. The job at hand is always the most important one he has ever undertaken. He never gives less than his best.

Author Biography

William H. Danforth (1870–1955) was an American businessman, author, philanthropist, and motivational speaker whose life was guided by the belief that true success comes from developing the whole person. Best known as the founder of the Ralston Purina Company and the author of I Dare You!, Danforth inspired countless readers and young people to pursue lives of purpose, discipline, and service. His philosophy emphasized balancing physical health, mental growth, social responsibility, and spiritual values, principles that remain influential today.

Born on April 10, 1870, in Charleston, Missouri, Danforth grew up in a hardworking family that valued integrity, perseverance, and education. He attended the University of Missouri, where he developed an interest in business and agriculture. In 1894, together with George Robinson, he founded the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company in St. Louis. The business later evolved into the Ralston Purina Company, which became one of the world's leading manufacturers of animal feed and pet food. Danforth believed that quality products, ethical leadership, and concern for customers were essential to lasting business success.

Despite his achievements as an entrepreneur, Danforth was equally passionate about personal development. He believed that every individual possessed untapped potential and encouraged people to challenge themselves with courage and determination. His best-known book, I Dare You!, first published in 1931, became a classic in motivational literature. Written in a warm and encouraging style, it urged readers to strive for excellence in every aspect of life rather than settling for mediocrity.

Danforth's commitment to education and youth leadership extended far beyond his writings. He established the American Youth Foundation, supporting programs that encouraged character development, leadership, and community service. He also played a significant role in the founding and growth of institutions such as the Danforth Foundation, which provided scholarships and promoted educational and civic initiatives.

William H. Danforth passed away on March 24, 1955, leaving behind a legacy that reached well beyond the business world. He is remembered not only as a successful industrialist but also as a mentor who believed that achievement should be measured by character as much as by wealth. His writings and philanthropic efforts continue to encourage people to live with courage, integrity, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to personal growth.
