Twenty-Five Ghost Stories

First published in 1904, ‘Twenty-Five Ghost Stories’ is a classic collection of scary short stories by W. Bob Holland.
This volume contains the most famous of the weird stories of Edgar Allan Poe, the master of this form of literature. ‘The Black Cat’ contains all the needed elements of mystery and supernatural, and yet the feline acts in a natural manner all of the time, and the story is quite possibly true. It is only in the manner of its telling that the tale becomes one that fittingly finds its place in this collection.

W. Bob Holland was an American writer, editor, and journalist best remembered for compiling Twenty-Five Ghost Stories, a collection of supernatural tales that introduced generations of readers to classic ghost fiction. Although he never achieved the widespread fame of many of the authors whose works he helped preserve, Holland played an important role in making timeless stories of mystery and the supernatural accessible to a broad audience. Much of what is known about his life comes from his long career in journalism rather than from his literary work.

Born as West Bob Holland on March 3, 1868, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, he grew up with a strong interest in writing and newspapers. He began his career as a country editor before working as a reporter in several major American cities, including Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, Denver, and Philadelphia. His talent for clear, engaging writing eventually earned him a place on the staff of the New York World. He also founded the Daily Record in Durham, North Carolina, and later worked with the Hearst newspaper organization, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the Miami Herald.

Alongside his newspaper career, Holland had a lasting interest in storytelling. His best-known literary contribution, Twenty-Five Ghost Stories, brought together memorable tales from established writers into a single volume. Rather than creating original supernatural fiction, Holland served as a thoughtful compiler, selecting stories that balanced suspense, atmosphere, and psychological intrigue. His collection remained in print through numerous editions, allowing new readers to discover classic ghost literature decades after its first publication.

Holland was also known for his humor and versatility, contributing jokes and short pieces to popular magazines of his time. His ability to write across different styles—from newspaper editorials to entertaining anthologies—reflected the adaptability that characterized many successful journalists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

West Bob Holland died on June 23, 1932. Though he is not remembered as a prolific novelist or poet, his editorial work helped preserve classic tales of the supernatural for future generations. Today, readers continue to encounter his name through Twenty-Five Ghost Stories, a collection that remains a cherished introduction to traditional ghost fiction and an enduring reminder of his contribution to popular literature.
