Book Description

“Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret” by Dr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor, first published in 1932, is a classic Christian biography that uncovers the inner life and enduring faith of James Hudson Taylor, the pioneering missionary to China and founder of the China Inland Mission. Written by his son and daughter-in-law, the book combines rich historical storytelling with deep spiritual insight.
More than just a record of missionary achievements, this inspiring narrative reveals the "secret" behind Taylor’s remarkable strength and peace amid suffering, hardship, and overwhelming responsibility. That secret was his complete dependence on Christ—a quiet but radical trust that transformed his ministry and inner life. From dangerous journeys to moments of loneliness and personal struggle, the book shows how Hudson Taylor found rest, joy, and unwavering purpose in his intimate relationship with God.
With a warm, engaging style and profound spiritual depth, Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret continues to challenge and uplift readers. Blending biography, inspiration, and devotional wisdom, it remains a treasured work in Christian literature—encouraging believers to live not by striving, but by abiding in Christ.

Author Biography

Dr. Howard Taylor (1862–1946) and Geraldine Taylor (1862–1948) were a husband-and-wife team known for their missionary work and influential biographical writings, particularly on the life and legacy of Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission (now OMF International). Howard was the son of Hudson Taylor and Maria Taylor, and he followed in their footsteps both as a missionary and as a writer. Geraldine, an accomplished author herself, married Howard in 1894, and together they became prominent figures in Christian missionary circles.
Howard Taylor was born in London and trained in medicine, which he practiced briefly before committing fully to missionary work. Geraldine, born in England as well, shared his passion for evangelism and Christian service. In their middle life, they dedicated themselves to documenting the remarkable life of Hudson Taylor and the spread of Christianity in China. Their most famous collaborative works include Hudson Taylor in Early Years and Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission, multi-volume biographies that remain foundational texts in missionary literature.
These works combined rigorous research with personal insight, drawing from family records and firsthand experience. Dr. Howard Taylor died in 1946, and Geraldine Taylor followed in 1948. Their literary and spiritual legacy endures in Christian history and biography.
