Memories of the Russian Court takes the reader from Anna Viroubova's entry in 1905 into the world of pomp and power at the center of the Russian Empire, through the subsequent twelve years that she spent with the Tsar’s family, finally providing captivating insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution shook the foundations of her world. Anna Alexandrovna Vyrubova was a Russian lady-in-waiting and close friend of Tsaritsa Alexandra Fyodorovna, Empress of Russia and wife of the last ruler of the Russian Empire, Nicholas II.

Particularly fascinating are the chapters that focus on Grigori Rasputin as she attempts to set the record straight again detractors like Alexander Spiridovich who claimed that Viroubova was Rasputin’s "fanatical admirer, the driving force of his cult, and was at the head of his loyalists".

Anna Alexandrovna Vyrubova (1884–1964), often spelled Anna Viroubova in older English publications, was a Russian court lady, memoirist, and one of the closest confidantes of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the last Empress of Imperial Russia. Although she did not hold political office, her close relationship with the imperial family placed her at the center of one of the most turbulent periods in Russian history. Her life has remained the subject of fascination due to her association with the Romanovs and the controversial mystic Grigori Rasputin.

Vyrubova was born on July 16, 1884, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, into a well-connected and respected family. Her father served in the Imperial Navy, providing her with access to the highest circles of Russian society. As a young woman, she became a lady-in-waiting to Empress Alexandra and gradually developed a deep personal friendship with her. Known for her unwavering loyalty, Vyrubova became a trusted companion who offered emotional support to the Empress, particularly during the difficult years when the imperial family struggled with the illness of Tsarevich Alexei, who suffered from hemophilia.

Because of her close friendship with the Empress and her acquaintance with Rasputin, Vyrubova became the target of widespread rumors and political accusations. During the final years of the Russian Empire, many critics claimed that she exercised significant influence over the royal family. However, historians generally agree that these allegations were often exaggerated and fueled by political tensions, public distrust of the monarchy, and sensational reporting rather than clear evidence of political power.

Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Vyrubova was arrested and imprisoned by the Provisional Government. Although she endured harsh treatment and repeated interrogations, no evidence was found to support many of the accusations made against her. After her release, she eventually escaped Soviet Russia and settled in Finland, where she spent the remainder of her life in relative obscurity.

During her years in exile, Vyrubova wrote memoirs describing her experiences with the Romanov family and the dramatic collapse of Imperial Russia. Her recollections provide valuable firsthand insight into court life, although historians often compare them with other contemporary sources to gain a balanced understanding of events. Anna Vyrubova died in 1964, remembered as a loyal companion of the last Russian Empress and an important witness to one of history's most dramatic political transformations.
