E.E. Doc Smith (Edward Elmer Smith) was an American science fiction writer, born on May 2, 1890, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He earned the nickname “Doc” after receiving a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from George Washington University, and he worked for much of his life as a food scientist specializing in doughnut flour before gaining fame as a pioneering science fiction author.
Smith began writing in the 1910s, but his literary career took off with the publication of The Skylark of Space in 1928, co-written with Lee Hawkins Garby. The Skylark series — including Skylark Three, Skylark of Valeron, and Skylark DuQuesne — established him as one of the founders of space opera, a subgenre known for intergalactic adventure, vast cosmic battles, and heroic protagonists. His other landmark series, the Lensman Saga (beginning with Triplanetary and First Lensman), expanded these ideas into an epic universe of good versus evil, influencing generations of writers and inspiring later works like Star Trek and Star Wars.
Smith’s fiction was known for its grand scale, scientific imagination, and moral clarity. He continued writing until his death on August 31, 1965, in Seaside, Oregon.
