Maurice W. Brockwell (1869–1958), whose full name was Maurice Walter Brockwell, was a distinguished British art historian, curator, and author. He devoted his life to the study of European painting, particularly the art of the Italian Renaissance and the Early Netherlandish masters. Through his books, exhibition catalogues, and museum work, Brockwell helped make the history of art more accessible to students, collectors, and general readers. His careful attention to detail and passion for artistic heritage earned him a respected place among the art scholars of his generation.

Born on May 24, 1869, in Sheffield, England, Brockwell was the eldest son of an Anglican clergyman. He received his education at St Paul's Cathedral Choir School in London and later attended Hurstpierpoint College. From an early age, he showed a deep appreciation for history, literature, and the visual arts. Extensive travels across Europe further broadened his understanding of artistic traditions and inspired him to pursue a career in art history.

Brockwell began his professional career at the National Gallery in London, where he assisted the museum's director, Sir Charles Holroyd, in revising the gallery's catalogues. His reputation as a meticulous researcher led to further opportunities, including serving as librarian and secretary to the renowned Renaissance scholar Bernard Berenson at Villa I Tatti in Florence during 1910–1911. He later prepared important catalogues for major exhibitions in London and eventually became curator of the celebrated Cook Collection at Doughty House in Richmond, one of Britain's finest private collections of Old Master paintings.

Throughout his career, Brockwell wrote extensively on Renaissance art.
