His endless curiosity and desire to understand the natural world made him a pioneer whose ideas continue to inspire artists, scientists, and innovators more than five centuries after his death.

Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in the small town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. He was the illegitimate son of Ser Piero, a respected notary, and Caterina, a local woman. Although he did not receive a formal university education, his exceptional talent was recognized early. Around the age of fourteen, he became an apprentice in the workshop of the renowned artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. There he mastered painting, sculpture, metalwork, engineering, and other crafts that shaped his remarkable career.

As an artist, Leonardo created some of the world's most celebrated masterpieces, including The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. His paintings are admired for their lifelike expressions, careful observation of nature, and innovative techniques such as sfumato, which created soft transitions between light and shadow. Despite producing relatively few finished paintings, each work reflected his relentless pursuit of perfection.

Beyond art, Leonardo filled thousands of pages with notebooks containing sketches, scientific observations, engineering designs, and anatomical studies. He examined the human body with remarkable precision and imagined inventions such as flying machines, armored vehicles, bridges, and hydraulic systems—many centuries ahead of their time. Although most of these designs were never built during his lifetime, they demonstrated an imagination that knew few limits.

In his later years, Leonardo accepted an invitation from King Francis I of France and spent his final years at the Château du Clos Lucé near Amboise. He died there on May 2, 1519, at the age of sixty-seven. Today, Leonardo da Vinci is remembered not only as one of history's greatest painters but also as a symbol of human curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning. His legacy continues to inspire people to explore the world with both imagination and reason.
