The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922) is a children’s fantasy novel by Hugh Lofting, an English author trained as a civil engineer. The novel is the second in a series of fifteen books featuring Doctor Dolittle, a character created by Lofting in letters written to his wife and children at home while he served in the Great War.

Dr. John Dolittle is an esteemed physician, but he finds himself drawn to animal patients more often than humans. In this book, his animal companions convince him to go on a daring voyage around the world to search for a missing friend. Their travels take them through storms and shipwrecks, to bullfighting rings and into courtrooms where animals testify as witnesses. All the while, Dr. Dolittle uses his incredible talent of animal communication to befriend and protect any animal he meets.

Beloved by generations of adults and children for their imaginative nature and moral worldview, Lofting’s books have inspired numerous adaptations for theater, film, and television.

Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) was an English-born author, illustrator, and civil engineer best known for creating Doctor Dolittle, one of the most beloved characters in children's literature. Born on January 14, 1886, in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, Lofting grew up in a large family and developed an early love for drawing, storytelling, and the outdoors. He studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States and later worked as an engineer in several countries, including Canada, Cuba, and West Africa. These travels exposed him to diverse cultures, landscapes, and wildlife, experiences that would later enrich his imaginative fiction.

The idea for Doctor Dolittle emerged during the First World War while Lofting was serving with the British Army. Rather than describing the harsh realities of war in letters to his children, he invented cheerful stories about a gentle doctor who could communicate with animals and embark on extraordinary adventures. These illustrated letters became the foundation for his first book, The Story of Doctor Dolittle, published in 1920. The novel was an immediate success and was followed by many other books, including The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, which won the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1923.

Lofting wrote and illustrated the Doctor Dolittle series himself, giving his books a distinctive charm and personality. His stories blended fantasy, humor, adventure, and gentle moral lessons, encouraging readers to appreciate kindness, courage, honesty, and empathy toward all living creatures. Hugh Lofting passed away on September 26, 1947, in California. Today, he is remembered as one of the pioneers of modern children's fantasy, whose imaginative storytelling and unforgettable characters have delighted readers for more than a century, leaving a lasting legacy of kindness, adventure, and wonder.
