In the late 1890s, Porter faced serious legal troubles after being accused of financial irregularities while working at a bank in Texas. After spending a period in Honduras, he returned to the United States and served more than three years in prison. Following his release, O. Henry settled in New York City, where he entered the most productive phase of his career.
