Born on May 6, 1868, in Paris, France, Leroux spent much of his childhood in Normandy. He studied law in Paris and initially worked as a lawyer after completing his education. Joining the respected French newspaper Le Matin, he gained recognition as a skilled investigative reporter and foreign correspondent. His assignments took him across Europe, Russia, North Africa, and the Middle East, where he witnessed important political events and gained firsthand experience of different cultures. These travels sharpened his observational skills and enriched the realism of his later fiction.

Leroux eventually left journalism to devote himself entirely to literature. His early detective novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907) introduced the brilliant amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille and is widely regarded as one of the finest locked-room mysteries ever written. The novel showcased Leroux's remarkable ability to combine logical reasoning with suspense, earning him a prominent place among the pioneers of modern detective fiction.

His greatest literary triumph came with The Phantom of the Opera, a haunting tale set beneath the Paris Opera House. Blending romance, horror, mystery, and psychological drama, the novel tells the tragic story of a mysterious musical genius who lives in the shadows. Though initially met with modest success, the book gradually became an international classic and inspired countless adaptations, including the world-famous stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
