Oswald Chambers (1874–1917) was a Scottish Christian teacher, preacher, and devotional writer whose spiritual insights have inspired millions of readers around the world. Although he published very little during his lifetime, his teachings were carefully preserved by his wife and later compiled into My Utmost for His Highest, one of the most influential Christian devotionals ever written. Chambers was born on July 24, 1874, in Aberdeen, Scotland. His father was a Baptist minister, and the family later moved to England and then to the United States for a period before returning to Britain. In 1917, he died unexpectedly in Cairo following complications from emergency surgery for appendicitis. He was only forty-three years old.

After his death, Chambers' wife, Gertrude "Biddy" Chambers, faithfully transcribed and organized the shorthand notes she had taken during his sermons and lectures. Her efforts resulted in the publication of My Utmost for His Highest in 1927, along with many other collections of his teachings.
