Swann's Way

This is the first novel of Marcel Proust’s monumental novel “In Search of Lost Time”, originally published in French in seven volumes. After elaborate reminiscences about his childhood with relatives in rural Combray and in urban Paris, Proust's narrator recalls a story regarding Charles Swann, a major figure in his Combray childhood, and his escapades in nineteenth-century privileged Parisian society, revolving around his obsessive love for young socialite Odette de Crécy.

Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was one of the most influential novelists in world literature. From childhood, he suffered from severe asthma, a condition that affected his health throughout his life and often confined him indoors, where he devoted himself to reading and writing.

After studying at the Lycée Condorcet and later attending the University of Paris, Proust became a familiar figure in Parisian literary and social circles. He began his career by writing essays, reviews, and translations, including admired translations of the works of the English art critic John Ruskin. His deep interest in literature, painting, music, and philosophy gradually shaped his unique artistic vision.

Proust dedicated much of his later life to writing In Search of Lost Time, a monumental work published between 1913 and 1927, with the final volumes appearing after his death. The novel is celebrated for its elegant prose, psychological depth, and unforgettable reflections on memory, sparked most famously by the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea.
