Time Regained

In this literary work (published posthumously in 1927) Marcel Proust is dying. He looks at the photographs of his youth and brings them to mind at that time. He remembers his mistresses and is aware of the transition from the great war reach society as a whole. Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was one of the most influential novelists in world literature. The French writer is best known for his monumental seven-volume novel In Search of Lost Time (À la recherche du temps perdu), a masterpiece that transformed modern fiction through its profound exploration of memory, time, love, art, and human consciousness. Proust was born on July 10, 1871, in Auteuil, then on the outskirts of Paris, France. His father, Adrien Proust, was a renowned physician and public health expert, while his mother, Jeanne Weil, came from a cultured and well-educated family. Marcel was especially close to his mother, whose affection and intellectual influence shaped his personality and literary interests. From childhood, he suffered from severe asthma, a condition that affected his health throughout his life and often confined him indoors, where he devoted himself to reading and writing.

After studying at the Lycée Condorcet and later attending the University of Paris, Proust became a familiar figure in Parisian literary and social circles. He began his career by writing essays, reviews, and translations, including admired translations of the works of the English art critic John Ruskin. His deep interest in literature, painting, music, and philosophy gradually shaped his unique artistic vision.

Proust dedicated much of his later life to writing In Search of Lost Time, a monumental work published between 1913 and 1927, with the final volumes appearing after his death. The novel is celebrated for its elegant prose, psychological depth, and unforgettable reflections on memory, sparked most famously by the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea. Through richly drawn characters and detailed observations, Proust explored the complexities of human relationships and the passage of time with unmatched sensitivity.

Marcel Proust died on November 18, 1922, in Paris at the age of fifty-one. Although he received only limited recognition during his early career, he is now regarded as one of the greatest novelists of all time.
