Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899), widely known as D.L. Moody, was an American Christian evangelist, educator, publisher, and hymn promoter whose passionate preaching helped shape evangelical Christianity in the nineteenth century. Renowned for his simple yet powerful presentation of the Gospel, Moody reached millions of people through revival meetings in the United States and Great Britain. His emphasis on personal faith, practical Christianity, and Christian education left a lasting impact that continues to influence churches and ministries around the world.

Moody was born on February 5, 1837, in Northfield, Massachusetts, into a large farming family. His father died when Moody was only four years old, leaving the family in financial hardship. Despite receiving limited formal education, he developed a strong work ethic and an energetic personality. As a young man, he moved to Boston to work in his uncle's shoe store, where he experienced a life-changing conversion to Christianity through the guidance of his Sunday school teacher. This experience inspired him to dedicate his life to sharing the Christian faith with others.

In the late 1850s, Moody settled in Chicago, where he began teaching Sunday school to children from poor neighborhoods. His sincere compassion and practical approach to ministry quickly attracted large numbers of people. During and after the American Civil War, he expanded his evangelistic work, organizing revival meetings that drew thousands of attendees. His partnership with gospel singer Ira D. Sankey made these gatherings especially memorable, as music became an important part of his ministry. Moody's preaching focused on God's love, forgiveness, and the need for personal commitment to Christ, expressed in language that ordinary people could easily understand.

Beyond his evangelistic campaigns, Moody devoted himself to education and publishing. He founded the Northfield Schools in Massachusetts to provide quality Christian education and established institutions that eventually became the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He also published books, sermons, and devotional materials that extended the reach of his ministry far beyond his public appearances.

Dwight L. Moody remained active in ministry until his death in 1899. His legacy lives on through the educational institutions he founded, the countless lives influenced by his preaching, and the enduring popularity of his writings.
