Richmal Crompton (1890–1969) was a beloved English author and educator best known for creating the unforgettable character William Brown in the Just William series. Through her witty storytelling and keen understanding of childhood, she became one of the most popular writers of children's fiction in the twentieth century. Her books, filled with humor, warmth, and lively adventures, have entertained generations of readers and remain classics of English literature.

She was born Richmal Crompton Lamburn on November 15, 1890, in Bury, Lancashire, England. Her father was a schoolmaster, and from an early age she developed a love of reading, writing, and learning. She studied at Royal Holloway College, University of London, and later earned a degree in Classics from the University of London. After completing her education, she became a schoolteacher, a profession that gave her valuable insight into the thoughts, behavior, and imagination of young people.

Crompton began writing while continuing her teaching career. She initially wrote stories and articles for magazines, displaying a natural gift for humor and sharp observation. In 1922, she introduced readers to William Brown, an energetic, mischievous eleven-year-old boy whose well-intentioned adventures often ended in comic chaos. The first Just William collection was an immediate success, and William quickly became one of the most recognizable characters in British children's literature.

Over the following decades, Crompton wrote thirty-eight Just William books along with numerous short stories and several novels for adults. Her stories captured the innocence, curiosity, and boundless energy of childhood while gently satirizing adult society. Although she contracted polio as an adult and later relied on a wheelchair for mobility, she continued writing with remarkable dedication and creativity throughout her life.

Richmal Crompton died on January 11, 1969, in Farnborough, Kent. Her literary legacy remains exceptionally strong, with the Just William books continuing to be published, adapted for radio, television, theatre, and film. Today, she is remembered as one of Britain's finest children's authors. Her timeless humor, memorable characters, and affectionate portrayal of childhood continue to delight readers of all ages, ensuring that William Brown's adventures remain as entertaining today as they were a century ago.
