Rafael Sabatini (1875–1950) was an Italian-born British novelist whose thrilling historical adventures captivated readers around the world. Sabatini was born on April 29, 1875, in Jesi, Italy, to parents who were both celebrated opera singers. Because of their international careers, he spent much of his childhood traveling across Europe. He lived and studied in Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and England, gaining fluency in several languages, including Italian, French, German, Portuguese, and English. Although English was not his first language, he chose to write exclusively in it, believing it offered the widest audience for his stories.

Before becoming a full-time novelist, Sabatini worked as a translator and journalist. These experiences sharpened his command of language and deepened his understanding of European history. Although he published numerous books during the early years of his career, widespread success came only after years of persistence and dedication.

His breakthrough arrived in the 1920s with the publication of Scaramouche (1921), a sweeping tale set during the French Revolution. The novel became an international bestseller and was soon followed by other classics such as Captain Blood (1922) and The Sea Hawk (1915), which established Sabatini as a master of historical adventure. His stories combined authentic historical settings with unforgettable characters whose courage, wit, and sense of justice appealed to readers of all ages. Many of his novels were later adapted into successful Hollywood films starring actors such as Errol Flynn.
