Dashiell Hammett (1894–1961) was a groundbreaking American author best known for revolutionizing detective fiction with his hard-boiled style. Born on May 27, 1894, in Maryland, Hammett left school early and worked various jobs before becoming a Pinkerton detective, an experience that deeply influenced his writing. His firsthand knowledge of crime and investigation gave his stories gritty realism and moral complexity.
Hammett began publishing short stories in Black Mask magazine during the 1920s, introducing tough, no-nonsense detectives who operated in corrupt urban settings. His most famous works include Red Harvest (1929), The Dain Curse (1929), The Maltese Falcon (1930), The Glass Key (1931), and The Thin Man (1934). The Maltese Falcon, featuring the iconic private eye Sam Spade, became a classic of American literature and was adapted into a successful film starring Humphrey Bogart.
In midlife, Hammett turned to political activism and joined the Communist Party, which led to his blacklisting during the McCarthy era. He also served in the U.S. Army during both World Wars. His health declined due to alcoholism and tuberculosis, and he stopped writing fiction after the 1930s.
Dashiell Hammett died on January 10, 1961. He remains a towering figure in crime fiction, admired for his sharp prose and lasting influence on the genre.
